Birding by Ear Small Group Tour - Discovery Park, Seattle

Black-capped Chickadee

$75.00 per person

Beginner to Advanced
7:00AM - 9:00AM

Do you want to become better at birding by ear? Come focus on identifying bird vocalizations in the forested areas, meadows, thickets, and walking paths throughout Discovery Park, Seattle. We can expect to hear a variety of sparrow, warbler, wren, woodpecker, flycatcher, finch, raptor, corvid, kinglet, thrush and more families of birds calling and singing throughout the morning.

Birding by ear is sometimes difficult for birders across many experience levels. In addition to working as a teacher naturalist, Joe is a public school music educator with experience in explaining the concepts of sound in a variety of ways that may be helpful to you! We will also discuss the pros and cons of learning tools such as Merlin sound ID, strategies for memorizing bird vocalizations, and how to obtain higher technical quality recordings of bird song.

We will begin right before sunrise to hear as many birds as possible, and also minimize exposure to anthropogenic (human-made) noise. We will be stopping often and standing still to allow for the birds to vocalize, and for our ears and minds to focus on sound. Expect some slight elevation gain and loss and the use of stairs throughout the park. We will not be walking down to the beaches on this tour.

We will meet in the Visitor Center / East Parking Lot at 7:00AM - Seattle, WA 98199, which typically has a bathroom available. If you have any questions about transportation or anything else, please use the contact form.

Even with a focus on birding by ear, please bring binoculars!
